What does being a ‘family-run business’ really mean?
For us, being family-run means everything. Single Steps Nurseries began as a shared dream, rooted in Ophea’s deep vision and brought to life with the steady encouragement of her husband, Joel.
Ophea had spent over twenty years managing nurseries for others, holding a BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies and refining her craft as a dedicated preschool professional. But there comes a time when you want to build something truly your own. A space where quality isn’t just a metric, but a promise.
Remarkably, that opportunity arrived during the pandemic. It was a strange, uncertain time to begin an adventure, yet through pure hard work, commitment, and an unyielding dedication, our little community flourished. And while we continue to grow, that original spark remains unchanged. The quality of childcare and education we offer to our families is what drives us every single day.
We often say that our heart is in everything we do, and we mean that quite literally. Even our company logo holds a piece of our history… those two tiny footprints at the very centre? They belong to our young son. A gentle, daily reminder of the wonder that keeping hope alive can achieve.
Today, as the leadership team, we balance our roles to look after you and your children.

Joel brings a unique perspective to our leadership. Fully Paediatric First Aid trained, his career with the Metropolitan Police means he has a natural, keen focus on safeguarding. He is also currently preparing to embark on his Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYITT) Level 6, ensuring family and professional dedication go hand-in-hand.
